The design challenge for this book was focusing the reader's attention on what Jesus said, while still making the contextual content readily accessible. After exploring many different versions of the layout, we converged on the three-column layout you can see in the sample pages below from the Gospel of Matthew.
The large center column is reserved for the quotes, prominently displayed in large, dark type. (Note that Christ does not speak right away in any of the Gospels, thus explaining the quote-free/blank column for the first few chapters.) When a particular quote is unclear, the reader need only look to the right column where the rest of the chapter text is presented in smaller type.
Each verse is presented as a separate paragraph, and the verse numbers appear in the left column—away from the text. Over on the left, the numbers are always available for reference, but they don't disrupt the natural flow of the reading experience.
