Favorite Gospel

Earlier today I was wondering if there was a consensus out there as to people’s favorite gospel. Short answer: no. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John are all chosen and for many different reasons. I surfed around a bit and found this post to best illustrate my point. Yes, I know it’s three years old, but they had the same Gospels way back in 2007 that we do now.

A Perfect Example

Peter and I are often asked why we created What He Said. Besides our usual response (the Bible is a hard book to read and there had to be an easier way for busy people to access the teachings of Christ), we often point out that we’re dismayed that so many self-professed Christians seem to get Jesus’ message so wrong.

Case in point: this guy. Can you imagine a worse way of getting the message across to young people than yelling out “You’re a hussie and going to hell!” and wearing a big red sign around your neck proclaiming, “You Deserve Hell”?

Declining Numbers = Good News

The most recent American Religious Identification Survey (March 2009) showed 15% of adults in America do not belong to any religion—and that percentage is on the rise.

Rather than wring his hands in woe and grief, however, House church leader Ken Eastburn thinks the decline is good news. Here’s his insightful perspective:

“American Christianity has long been characterized by all the wrong things: partisan politics, tips for better living, the so-called ‘prosperity gospel,’ hypocrisy, and condemnation—to name a few. When that kind of Christianity begins to decline, we have much to be thankful for. It means true Christianity—the kind characterized by loving one’s enemies, radical giving, integrity and compassion—has room to grow.”

Back to the Drawing Board

What He Said has barely gone to press and now it looks like it is already dated. Christianity Today reports that the folks behind Conservapedia have decided to rewrite the Bible so that Jesus doesn’t seem too liberal.

Among the changes . . . Jesus no longer says “He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.” This was removed because it makes Jesus seem soft on sin. Also, in the Conservapedia version, Jesus has apparently changed his mind about material wealth. That will certainly help the camel slip through the needle’s eye easier.

Third Time’s a Charm

Our first proof copy of the book, while exhilarating to finally hold in your hands and flip through its pages, revealed a constraint in the printing process that we needed to address. The second proof copy saved us from making a boo-boo that would have haunted our sleep for eons. The third proof, happily, was clean! We should be ready to go very soon…
