This is why Mary, as a faithful Jewish woman, was bringing a sacrifice to the Temple. One interesting fact: the Law required the sacrifice of a lamb, but if the mother could not afford it, she could offer two turtledoves or two pigeons (Lv 12:8). Mary and Joseph were likely poor then.
